Vocabulary Instruction

Individual Vocabulary Log

Students log vocabulary in their personal dictionaries, adding sample sentences and pictures.

Comprehension Instruction

Direct Vocabulary Instruction

First Day of Unit: Direct Instruction of 2 to 3 tier-two words chosen to represent theme of the new reading.

4-6 days per unit: Direct instruction in morphology. Students learn a select Latin or Greek root, and apply it to multiple new words.

2-4 days per unit: Game-based vocabulary review activities of theme words and generative morphology

Eyes on Text

Teacher in each group sets the purpose for reading (roles for RT, focus of visualization) then students use a variety of strategies to read select grade level text.

This is where the students read the text that they are going to explore during the RT and technology activities. You may have them read directly from the story, or you may use one of the alternative reading activities (link to the right).

30 (groups alternate for 15 minutes)

Reciprocal Teaching

Students use the reciprocal teaching to read, discuss and comprehend select grade level material.​

One-on-one Reflective Learning Conferences

Students do presentations of their work products from the previous four class sessions. Extra points for using vocabulary words in their spoken presentation.
